Camera Graffiti
From Mod Mania
G'day how's it cracking? For my mods this semester, I'm going to begin by looking one where you can turn a used disposable camera into a portable temporary sign or graffiti projector. This mod is from an activist website, where they use technology to enact their activism. I'm also thinking of doing some kind of bike related mod, but see what happens.
First things first, I need to get hold of some used, disposable cameras...

30/8 Update!
I've had quite a bit of trouble getting hold of used disposable cameras. There are a number of reasons for this. Firstly, because of the growth of digital photography, it has taken over the holiday photo market, which before was a popular area of use for disposable cameras. From talking with staff at a number of photo development stores, they've repeated this change in consumer habits. Thus there is a great reduction of disposable cameras being submitted for development. Carrying over this fact, means theres next to none left for me to scab!
Another aspect that has hampered my efforts is OH&S laws. The type of camera I am after is, a used disposable camera, with a flash. The flash is the pivotal feature that my mod relies on to be successful. But it is also the feature that brings OH&S laws into play(I think anyway). Technically stores are not allowed to give away used cameras with flashes, because of the risk of getting a shock from the capacitor used to charge the flash. This OH&S restriction, has limited my possible scope to smaller stores who are more willing to overlook this and pretend I found it in their bin. I've approached both the photo development departments of Big W and K mart, but both said flatly they couldn't help me, because of the OH&S issues.
One store in Albury was willing to over look this difficulty, so to cut a long story short, I now have one camera to work with. Currently I've dismantled it, and am going through the process of converting it into a projector. I was also given a water proof container for disposable cameras, which could be incorporated into the mod.
I'm still trying to get more cameras, as I'd planned on using some as part of a collaboration with Simone and Xisca, on their Elevator mod, 'Morning Lift' http://modmania.openobjectproject.org/wiki/Morning_Lift. I was also considering doing an in class hands on tutorial, where everyone created their own projector with a personalised message. This will now depend though on how easy it is to do the mod, and if I'm able to get enough cameras to make it possible.
15/9 Update!
A fair bit has changed since my last update. I'm minus 4 teeth and got a box full of cameras! Well they're not really connected but they are changes.(Got my wisdom teeth pulled, so don't stress, didn't get lose them while trying desperate measures to get cameras)
One of the camera stores that I've been dropping by regularly, came through with the goods. They'd taken my number and gave a call the other day saying they had some. I thought it'd be one or two. Got in there and was handed a whole box full! At least 20, crazy stuff I know!
Also I've been mucking around with the cameras, and got it to work with the manual set up. The electronics are pretty simple actually. Its more creating the housing that is a little difficult, but not too hard. Just a matter of cutting the case to fit. I'm going to source the bits for the auto one and have a crack at that.

With my change of fortunes, the in class demo is a good possiblity. I'd be able to show the class how to make one, and maybe if people are interested, and I can hold of some soldering irons, could do a hands on workshop in class. Also does anyone have any suggestions for messages to put into the cameras? So all in all, its on the up!Camera Workshop details
I'm going to run a workshop, first week back, on how to make one of these camera projectors. If your interested in taking part and building your very own camera with your own pic or message, then give a hoi on s3134460@student.rmit.edu.au . I need to know numbers cos theres a few parts that I'll need to buy before hand.
For the workshop you'll need this gear:
-stanley knife -cutting board -AA battery -steel ruler -$2 for the bits -flathead screwdriver (Not essential, but bring it if you've got it) -a soldering iron (I'm going to be able to borrow a few, but if you have your own, bring it)Also you can make up a slide or two, to put into the camera projector extravaganza.
-Basically can just be a piece of cardboard, 30mm by 30mm(see pic above). -Draw on to it, a 15mm by 15mm square in the middle. -Draw on your shape or message and cut it out. -There you go, you've got a slide! If you want to create a slide with text on it, try and get hold of some overhead sheet plastic and either print or write the text onto this. I haven't tried this yet, but I'd say it'd be alot easier to make and clearer to read.
So thats it, send me an email if you want in(s3134460@student.rmit.edu.au) and have a good break!
Workshop People
So far these people are up for the workshop:

If your interested and your names not on the list, just add it and send me an email. Should all be cool.
