Mod 1: From Unwanted Plastic to Modded Fantastic
From Mod Mania
modding the humble plastic bag into something a little more useful and pretty!
This mod is inspired by a segment I (accidently)saw on Better Homes and Gardens (yes, thats right Better Homes and Gardens)
Well I thought it was pretty cool anyway..
YOU WILL NEED:
- an iron
- a heap of plastic bags (the type you get at supermarkets) in colours that you like
- baking paper
STEPS:
- Trim the handles and bottom seam of each bag and open it up into a larger rectangle of plastic.
- Layer 4 bags on top of each other (that’s 8 layers of plastic), place them on a sheet of baking paper and then cover with another sheet of baking paper.
- Turn the heat dial on the iron to about mid way and turn the steam function off.
- Now iron over the stack of plastic bags, making sure to not leave the iron in the same spot for too long, this will burn holes through the plastic.
- When you have ironed over the entire area, flip it over and iron the other side
- Peel back a corner of baking paper to make sure the plastic has fused together. It should be now be one smooth layer. If it is not completely melted together iron it some more.
- When the plastic is fused together, peel off the baking paper. It is now a workable, sewable, durable material. Trim it to size and get sewing!
- You can make reusable grocery bags, make up bags, pencil cases, umm...clothing? (sure, why not?)
- They are cheap, waterproof, easy to make and a great way of re-using plastic bags so that they don’t end up in the ocean, choking turtles and such.
