Mod five senses

The previous projects were based on the idea of mod to everyday things, and I’d like to know how they will affect me. I modified small everyday things so far. These things were modified for comfort or improvement, and they made my life a bit easier.

In the week 6 class, one phrase made me think something different. The phrase was personal relationship to the world. I took the phrase into body mod. But it’s not about outside of body; it’s about inside of body which is senses. So, I’m going to mod five senses– sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. However, I won’t mod eyes, ears, nose, tongue and hands; I’ll mod the relationship between organs and objects/target, so there’ll be some items to mod the connection to the world. They might obstruct, twist, improve or change the functions.Let's make something to mod the function!

1. SIGHT
[Mod as Addition]
Predatory animals have eyes on the front of face because they have to make sure the distance and run after their prey. Herbivorous animals have eyes on the side of face because they have to watch for any enemy. There is one exception which is rabbit. It can see 360 degrees. What about humans? Humans have eyes on the front of face, and cannot see the back without turning around. When humans want to have ability which they do not have, they create a device to gain the ability such as airplane for flying, scuba for swimming, shield machine for digging etc. so, why can’t we have rabbit eyes?

Think about materials.

Stick plastic mirror to PP side parts.

Stick them to the goggle.

Let's see the back. I can see the audio. Side mirror with human.

The problem was that the side parts shook when I walked, but I could see the back.Although I thought it would be good to be able to see the back anytime, the fact was that it was bit annoying to see another view with normal view. Front is enough.

2. TOUCH
[Mod as Obstruction]
Skin has tactile senses, pain senses, thermo receptive senses (warm and cold), itch/ tickle sensation. It is quite tough, but sensitive function. Let’s try to change intersection between skin and objects.

Fingertips are veru sensitive. Add something between them.

Let's put air between them by using air cushion.

Slide them into the glove, and wear it.

Pressure around the fingers is irritating. Even the air cushion is usually used for protecting, it just provides obstruction. Besides, when I wear it, I tried to touch everything softly because of trying not to break air cushion.

3. HEARING
[Mod as Improvement]
Have you seen fake big ears? I saw it in the comedy show. It seems stupid, but the function of big ear must work well because some animals have it to hear well such as rabbits and elephants. It might be worth trying.

Find soft material, check the size of ear and cut the material.

Sew an elastic the edge of soft material. Wear it.It did not affect on the function much because it did not cover the earhole.When I hold the soft piece with hand, it collected sounds more.

4. SMELL
[Mod as Improvement]
Nose is used for breathing and smelling. As breathing, it carries out three functions; one is filter, humidifier and heater. I’ll strengthen the filter system with dust mask.

Looks familiar? I was thinking about dust mask. I wear it because I should not get dust when I sand or use some machinery. Sometimes, I need to talk when I am wearing the dust mask.

Maybe, I do not need the lower part of mask to cover mouth because it just needs to cover my nose to avoid getting dust.

But, the mask does not keep the form without the lower edge, so cut the middle part with keeping the lower edge.

Fold the inside wdge to cover the nostril.

Even I can close my mouth, it looks bit danger that mouth is exposed. Add net to cover my mouth.

5. TASTE
[Mod as Control]
Food, especially taste, is so important for life. When people go abroad or go somewhere totally different, and eat different foods, they would realize how they could eat foods which fit to their tastes. Sometimes, people just bring own spice to wherever they go, and add spice when they eat something which is not spice. It can be added to eating irons so that they do not need to bring or ask staff to bring more spice.
