Modification and its place in modern day society

From Mod Mania

I modify because I can, not because I can’t. In today’s modern society people who modify choose to because they perceive that they can. They most likely do not have the knowledge base to perform a modification to a high quality or product finish yet they gain satisfaction knowing that they have accomplished the mod themselves. To modify an existing object is a want for something different. If you want it bad enough you will do what it takes, time and labour wise.

A modification is only a modification if it modifies what was originally outlined by the manufacturer, an add on that is sold through the product line has become an accessory. People become confused when attempting to modify an object and resort to installing factory items to band aid their issue. To the avid modifier this is not the true definition of modification but rather a ‘soft mod’.

People contorting the truth to proclaim to have modified there object do so without hesitation when they do not understand that sub ordinate parts do not require anything more than installation. This is then that the modification process has become ‘off the shelf’ or an accessory. Little is gained through this form of modification for both the user and viewer.

Understanding a modifier requires one to become emersed in the modifying scene that said modifier is already involved in. Doing this enables a person to understand from their own experiences why modification of the object is held in such high regard. A ‘soft modifier’ may not enjoy a modification in the same way a modifier does because they cannot appreciate the time and effort taken to perform such an operation. To the ‘soft modifier’ performing a modification should be cheap quick and easy otherwise it doesn’t happen.

Today’s society no longer passes down skills gained in high volumes because people as a whole are becoming ‘soft modifier’. Information gathered through time will be lost or not applicable to societies needs and subsequently banished. The scary part of all this is how society perceives what they want and retaliates in hordes to what they get.

'Ask yourself one question, are you soft?'
