Modifying Origins - what made a modifier a modifier?

From Mod Mania

'WRITING PIECE HAS BEEN POST PONED AS THREAD HAS BEEN MISPLACED WHILST FORUM IS BEING UPDATED BY ADMINISTRATION'

I have asked members of a modifying community based around the Subaru Liberty what their origins are for modifying. I posted a topic in the an off topic talk forum to create a pin board for people to place there experiences in one place.

I posted the following:

I am researching for a writing piece for school on people and their modifying origins. What makes a person want to take an existing product and reconfigure the qualities to perform the task or tasks they wish it to. How have your experiences enabled your mind to look outside the cube the creator produced surrounding their product and made you want to extend that cube to accommodate your needs?

For me I grew up in a technical and creative household, the modifying origin comes from using what I have to it fullest potential. As a young kid I was not always presented with the opportunity to surround myself with the products with a high nominal price tag. I would accommodate my needs by trawling the local shops to find a similar or existing product/s and modify to suit. The most common object I would modify was my bicycle. I was the only kid rocking a bitza mountain bike but it smoked all the high priced opponents it came up against in my neighbourhood during its time.

Through this exposure I have built a fascination with modification and the idea that a product is what you make it not what someone tells you it is.

Feel free to throw your two cents or gold coins in, this is an open pin board for reflection. There is no right or wrong answer, just experiences.

Cheers
