Urban tyre swing
From Mod Mania
For this project i will be constructing a tyre swing on the corner of Swanston st and Collins st. This particular product is intended to highlight the current strains on both humans and nature. The corporate world is slowly diminishing the amount of time we have for leisure activities. Companies are wanting longer work hours and fewer holidays. There is very little time to stop and have fun during these stressful times. That is why i have created the 'urban tyre swing'. Its creation is mereley a reminder to us all- "dont forget to have fun and enjoy what your doing" Hopefully people are amused by the product even if they arnt using it. I chose that particlar location on Swanston st because it's a busy area that has a large tree in full view of the public.
This product modification will simply consist of an old car wheel that I'll get from Beaurepairs (or Merri creek). And some rope from Bunnings warehouse.
There are a few issues to be solved. Security: Because this is a modification of both the product and the environment i will have to consider what security will have to say. "Take that sh*t down" is what i imagine. I will document the project by taking photos and possibly filming it. (both the creation and the destruction of the modification.)
I was thinking about hanging two or three tyres from the tree to emphasise how much strain we put on the environment. This comes by using so much raw materials and throwing away so many unrecyclabe products.
The only problem is getting the tyres into the city and hanging them all up. (at a reasonable time)
Here's how long it takes for some commonly used products to biodegrade.
So ive finished the modification today and it was a success. Went off without a hitch, No security, no police, no broken branches, no broken bones. The product had a the desired effect with people, both adults and children, stopping to gaze at the odd swing. I only left the swing up for 45 minutes but many people stopped to have a ride and even pose for a picture with the swing. Excellent!
Here are some pictures of the finished modification- Presenting the 'Urban Tyre Swing'
