Anthropocite, 2015

Anthropocite is an Open Spatial Workshop (OSW) project with Terri Bird and Bianca Hester. It is part of the MUMA permanent collection and was commissioned for the ‘Earth Sciences Garden’ at Monash University, Clayton.

Anthropocite is a proposition, a fictional rock type and a narrative of formation. Responding to recent critical discussions regarding the effect of human activity on planetary systems, the work speculates on what may result over the coming millennium as a consequence of the mutating relationship between humanity and geological forces of transformation.

The work was developed in conversation with Dr Andrew Tomkins, James Driscoll and Julie Boyce, geologists and researchers in the School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment at Monash University, Professor Nick Birbilis, head of the Department of Materials Engineering at Monash University and Dermot Henry, manager of the Natural Science Collections at Museum Victoria.
