sun in ACCA

While ACCA gives a good impression of being completely windowless there are a few places where light enters the building. I set up cameras and took some time-lapse video.

This video shows the sun moving through the kitchen space at ACCA. It was filmed on 14th January from 9:00am to 3:15pm. There is direct sun here from before 9am (although on the day of filming it was a little overcast). The sun stops coming into the space at around 12:30pm.

This video shows the front entrance space. It was filmed on 14th January from 9:30am to 4:30pm. Direct sunlight enters the space from about 3pm onwards and remains until shortly before sunset (approximately 8:30pm).

This video shows the window on the north face of the foyer – yes, there’s a window there. It was filmed on 7th January from 9:20am to 11:45am. Direct sun enters the space between 9:30am and 11:20am. I think this is probably the most beautiful of the light movements but it’s also of the shortest duration.

It’s clear from these videos that direct sunlight within ACCA is limited to before 12:30pm and after 3pm. If I was to consider the amount of usable sunlight – enough direct light to bounce off a mirror – then I’m probably restricted to before 12pm and after 3:15pm. This leaves 3 hours of the day when the work would not be activated by light – a bit of a problem. Will probably need to use roof mounted mirrors.
