iPod repair log.

4G 20GB

Initial Condition:
boots to

Action:
Reset iPod
– eventually (numerous resets) booted to “do not disconnect”
– iTunes sees iPod but reports that the iPod needs repairing

Restored iPod software using iTunes
– iTunes exits restore with “Unknown error (1418)”

Numerous restarts
– couldn’t get iPod into self diagnostic mode
– iPod sometimes booted to a working menu, sometimes to a dead iPod icon
– couldn’t boot to self diagnostic mode

Boot to Disk Mode
– took a number of tries to get into disk mode

Connected to Mac
– Disk Utility sees iPod as unformatted

Formatted iPod in Disk Utility
– repeated clicks from drive
– Disk Utility hangs

Opened iPod

4G iPod opened

There was quite a bit of dirt inside the iPod, this is a common problem (I have only seen one iPod where this was not the case).

Cleaned all components

Re-connected HD and battery
– iPod working, no noticeable problems

Report:
iPod now operational.

Notes:
Dirt or a loose HD connector may have been interfering with operation. If problem reappears this may indicate a failing HD.
