Installed hard drive in known working iPod
– hard drive boots to standard menu
Connected drive to Mac
– hard drive appears in iTunes
– drive contains 5 GB of Audio and 400 MB of data
Backed up data
Replaced hard drive cable with known working unit
– iPod boots to normal menu and appears to be fully functional
Reinstalled original hard drive cable
– iPod boots to normal menu and appears to be fully functional
Connected to PC
– iPod appears in iTunes

– iPod plays and functions normally
Some grit is trapped between the iPod screen and face.
Disassembled iPod to access screen.
Cleaned screen and inside of face with cotton swab
Reassembled iPod
Reset iPod
– iPod boots to normal menu

Report:
Disassembled iPod, removed and reinstalled hard drive cable, reassembled iPod.
iPod now appears to be fully functional.
Notes:
The hard drive cable may have been loose.
