Job No. 26

Published by at 8:22 pm under iPod nano

iPod repair log.

Model:
nano 2GB white

Initial Condition:
tape residue on back
nano wont turn on
no activity

Action:
Reset nano
– no activity

Connected to Mac

– nano boots to bad folder then resets itself

– repeats this about 10 times very quickly then boots to “do not disconnect”
– iTunes gives warning that a corrupt iPod has been detected and suggests ‘restoring’ the iPod.

Charged nano for 1/2 hour

Restored iPod from iTunes
– iTunes reports that “The iPod “iPod” could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1418)”

Used Disk Utility to partition the nano as ‘Free Space’ (see HD repair for details)
– partition failed with “Input/output error”

Used Terminal to interrogate nano
– ‘disktool’ reports nano as

***Disk Appeared (‘disk1’,Mountpoint = ”, fsType = ”, volName = ”)

– ‘pdisk’ crashes with “Floating point exception”

Opened nano

Removed screen and click-wheel assembly

Plugged main board into Mac (the nano will function without the screen or click-wheel)

nano circuit board plugged in

– iTunes gives warning that a corrupt iPod has been detected and suggests ‘restoring’ the iPod.

Restored iPod from iTunes
– as before iTunes reports an error

Checked the pins on the flash chip for faulty connections
– all pins seem secure

Removed black tape from iPod dock connector and checked pins for faulty connections
– all pins seem secure

Reattached nano to the Mac and used Terminal to interrogate nano
– ‘disktool’ reports nano as

***Disk Appeared (‘disk2’,Mountpoint = ”, fsType = ”, volName = ”)

– ‘pdisk’ reports “No valid block 1 on ‘/dev/rdisk2’ ”

This is a change in behaviour, not sure why (I’ve prodded this iPod with a multi-meter quite a bit while trying to trouble-shoot job number 28, maybe I reset a component or dislodged a bridged circuit?).

Erased iPod using Disk Utility (partitioned as “Free Space”)
– procedure completed normally

‘Restored’ iPod using iTunes
– restore completed normally

Unplugged iPod and reconnected to Mac
– iPod recognised by iTunes

Copied songs to iPod
– songs copied normally

Replaced insulating tape on dock connector and reassembled iPod
– iPod functions normally

Connected iPod to a PC and ‘Restored’ iPod using iTunes
– restore completed normally

Report:
Disassembled iPod, checked for broken connection, erased iPod using Disk Utility, ‘Restored’ iPod using iTunes, reassembled iPod.

iPod now appears to be fully functional.

Notes:
Not really sure why this one started working.

Component Summary:

Memory

Battery (working condition unknown)

Logic Board

Screen

Repairs complete, pick-up time to be advised.
