iPod repair log.

Model:
nano 2GB black

Initial Condition:
some scratches on front and back
small dint in face, top left near hold button
nano wont turn on
no activity

Action:
Reset nano
– no activity

Boot to self diagnostic mode
– not booting

Boot to Disk Mode
– not booting

Connected to Mac
– nano boots to “Language” menu
– lock icon at top of screen indicating hold button is on (even though it is not)
– buttons are unresponsive
– iTunes doesn’t see nano
– Disk Utility doesn’t see nano
– charging icon appears on screen

Disconnected nano
– battery indicator shows 3/4 full
– no response from click-wheel

Flicked Hold Switch off and on
– no change in hold status on screen

Opened nano

Looks like the hold switch has come loose from the main circuit board.

Removed main circuit board.
– the solder joints have broken in a number of places at the hold switch

Re-soldered hold switch connections

Reassembled nano
– when mounting the main board take note of the screw types, the 2 fine threaded screws go at the bottom near the dock connector, the course threaded screw belongs in the middle, right hand side hole.

Connected iPod to Mac
– iPod appears in iTunes

Disconnected iPod
– iPod boots to standard menu
– iPod operates normally

Report:
Re-soldered hold switch on main circuit board.

    The hold switch on my nano has broken & I was ready to bin it until I read this report. Instead I opened my nano up & discovered that the same thing has happened to mine. The switch solder has worn off so now I know what to do! Thanks, this report is the most helpful I have found on the net. Keep up the good work!
