iPod repair log.

Model:
3G 20GB
(windows formatted)

Initial Condition:
iPod operational
can’t download from iTunes

Action:
Connected to Mac
– iTunes 7 sees iPod
– created “iSOP Playlist” on iPod
– copied test song to playlist

Playlist and song download worked without a problem.

Report:
This appears to be a problem with the computer being used. There are a number of reasons this may be happening, check out this Apple page for possible reasons/solutions.

I suggest some or all of these actions are taken (in this order):
– download and install (or re-install) the latest version of iTunes on the computer being used. The latest version of iTunes should tell you why a song is not being copied (if it doesn’t you may need to reset your warnings).
– update the iPod using the latest version of iTunes
– check that iTunes can play the song you are trying to copy, if it can’t then iTunes may have lost its link to the song file
– authorise the computer for use with this iPod

Notes:
Also note: Moving songs from iPod to iTunes is restricted. Quoting from the Apple website “Music and media not purchased from the iTunes store only syncs one way, from your computer to your iPod.” In other words you can’t move songs from your iPod to iTunes unless you’ve purchased the song at the iTunes Music store (and “Authorize” the computer you are transferring to). – Yes, I think this sucks too, but there are third party applications that will circumvent this restriction. iLounge has a good tutorial and list of software here.

Component Summary:
