iPod repair log.

Initial Condition:
some scratches on facehold switch seems stiff
iPod boots to
Action:
Connected iPod to Mac
– iPod boots to “do not disconnect”
– Mac gives dialogue box asking if I want to Initialise the drive
– iTunes gives warning that corrupt iPod has been detected and suggesting I ‘restore’ the iPod.
Disconnected and reconnected iPod
– iPod boots to
– hard drive makes clicking noise
Opened iPod
– hold switch appears ok
Disconnected battery

Cleaned out dirt
Reassembled iPod
– iPod boots to
Installed known working drive
– iPod boots to normal menu and is fully operational
Re-installed original hard drive

Connected to Mac
– iPod mounts on desktop
– iPod appears in iTunes, and asks to be named
– no songs or data are present on the iPod however iTunes reports that 16 GB is in use
Disconnected iPod from Mac

Connected iPod to PC
– iPod appears in iTunes
– same as Mac, no songs but iTunes reports that 16 GB is in use
Restored iPod software using iTunes
– restore process fails to complete (iTunes crashes)
Connected iPod to Mac and Restored with iTunes
– restore process completed normally
– iPod operates normally
Connected iPod to PC
– iTunes detects a “Macintosh formatted iPod” asks to ‘Restore’ iPod
Restored iPod software using iTunes
– restore process completed normally
Disconnected iPod
– iPod boots to normal menu
– iPod plays and functions normally
Reassembled iPod

– iPod operates normally
Report:
Disassembled iPod, installed working drive, reinstalled original drive, restored iPod software with Mac, restored iPod software with PC, reassembled iPod.iPod now appears to be fully functional.
Notes:
The iPod may have lost it’s link to the hard drive. There is some evidence that the iPod stores information about the boot drive in memory, perhaps connecting a working drive and recharging the battery restored the link?
