Disconnected hard drive
Cleaned out dirt
Reassembled iPod
– no change in condition
Installed known working drive
– no change in condition
Connected to Mac
– iPod mounts on desktop
– iPod appears in iTunes
Charged battery for 1/2 hour
– iPod boots to normal menu
– iPod behaves normally
Reinstalled original hard drive

– iPod operates normally (plays songs, etc.)

Reassembled iPod

Report:
Disassembled iPod, installed working drive, charged battery for 1/2 hour, installed original drive, and reassembled iPod.
iPod now appears to be fully functional.
Notes:
The iPod may have lost it’s link to the hard drive. There is some evidence that the iPod stores information about the boot drive in memory, perhaps connecting a working drive and recharging the battery restored the link?
