iPod repair log.

Model:
mini 4GB green
(windows formatted)

Initial Condition:
many scratches on front and back
dints bottom left
bottom plastic panel loose

iPod boots to dead iPod

Action:
Connected to Mac
– iPod powers up to “sad iPod” then goes back to battery charging mode
– iPod doesn’t appear on desktop
– iPod doesn’t appear in iTunes

Opened iPod
– there a bit of sand inside the iPod, and stuff that looks like sand but isn’t

this is a surface mount resistor that’s come loose and is now stuck to the hard drive mounting tape.

The main circuit board has a number of destroyed components,

and the headphone assembly has been ripped from the circuit board.

This logic board is probably beyond repair.

Re-soldered loose resistor to circuit board.

Reassembled iPod
– iPod boots to Apple symbol but doesn’t get any further

Connected iPod to Mac
– iPod boots to Apple symbol and then goes into battery charging mode

– after a few minutes boots to “sad iPod” and makes a very strange noise (a cross between a whirring and a guitar riff).

Disconnected iPod

iPod boots to bad battery

Installed hard drive in known working mini
– boots to “sad iPod” and makes the strange sound again

Installed click-wheel in known working mini
– intermittent behaviour

Examined click-wheel ribbon cable
– a number of tears are present

Replaced click-wheel cable with known working cable
– click-wheel functions normally

Installed battery in known working mini
– battery functions normally

Report:
Main circuit board is severely damaged.

iPod could not be repaired

Notes:
Suggest you offer screen for trade with job 27.
