repeatedly boots to

Action:
Reset iPod
– no change in condition

Boot to self diagnostic mode
– crashes intermittently

Boot to Disk Mode
– crashes with blank screen

Connected to Mac
– iTunes doesn’t see iPod
– Disk Utility doesn’t see iPod

Opened iPod

Disconnected battery
– battery tests OK

Disconnected HD
– HD appears bad (continual clicking noise)

Installed known working HD
– restarted to

Booted to Disk Mode
– iPod screen displays “ok to disconnect”
– not recognised by computer unless “HOLD” is on

Restored iPod Software with iPod updater
– installation completed without incident

Restarted iPod
– iPod boots to standard menu

Connected to Mac
– iPod not recognised by computer over FireWire (but will charge)
– iPod sometimes recognised by computer over USB, behaviour erratic

Cleaned dock connector
– iPod behaving normally with HD replaced

Report:
Faulty HD. Replaced with HD from Job 2, iPod now fully operational.

Notes:
iPod restored, HD cleared.
