iPod repair log.

Model:
4G 20GB
(Windows formatted)

Initial Condition:
Bottom left corner is pushed in slightly and there are some marks on the face at this location.
Click-wheel is slightly depressed at bottom.
Light scratches on iPod body.
Battery is low and iPod wont boot.

Action:
Connected to Mac
– iPod goes into battery charging mode
– after 5 min. iPod powers up to “do not disconnect”
– iPod appears on desktop
– iPod appears in iTunes
– iPod appears to be a little slow in accessing and copying tracks

Opened iPod

Disconnected battery.

Removed hard drive.
– hard drive (shown on right) does not have the usual padding (but does have double sided tape; awaiting the padding?)

iPod hard drive with and without padding

– fitted padding to hard drive (foam sourced from some recycled packaging I have lying around)

iPod hard drive with DIY padding

Removed main circuit board and screen assembly.

Removed battery.

Re-seated click-wheel assembly (pushed it down into the front panel; it’s held in place by double sided tape).

Reassembled iPod
– bottom left corner is no longer depressed
– iPod’s sides bulge slightly

Removed iPod back and squeezed sides together. Reassembled iPod.
– back and front panels now fit flush

Tested iPod
– iPod operates normally (as before)

Connected iPod to Mac
– iPod mounts on desktop
– iPod appears in iTunes
– iPod response now appears normal

Report:
Disassembled and reassembled iPod. Added foam to hard drive.

iPod now appears to be fully functional.

Notes:
A loose hard drive connector or a lack of insulation between the hard drive and the main circuit could have caused the iPod to act sluggish. If the problem returns this may indicate a failing HD.

Component Summary:

good HD (attached foam to hard drive)

good Battery (working condition unknown)

good Logic Board

good Screen

good Buttons

Ready for pick-up (after Tue. 21st Nov.)
